Andrew Wiggins family matters updates: Warriors forward to remain out until 2023 NBA Playoffs

Andrew Wiggins missed his 23rd straight game for the Warriors on Tuesday, but he appears to be getting closer to a return.

The 28-year-old forward, who broke out last season en route to being named an All-Star starter, has not suited up for Golden State since Feb. 13. He has been listed on the Warriors’ injury report as inactive due to a personal family matter.

Following its home win against the Thunder on Tuesday, Golden State now sits at 42-38 ahead of the Clippers for fifth place — and, more importantly, out of the Play-In Tournament, just a half-game ahead of the Lakers.

The Warriors are now 13-10 during Wiggins’ 23-game absence.

After playing a starring role in Golden State’s run to the 2022 NBA title — Wiggins was arguably the team’s second-best player behind Stephen Curry — the former No. 1 overall pick has had an up-and-down season.

Prior to this extended absence, Wiggins had shuffled in and out of the lineup, missing 20 of the team’s first 49 games to start the season. In addition to missing 15 games in December with an adductor strain, he’s also missed time with a nagging foot injury and non-COVID illness.

He’s played well when available, averaging 17.1 points per game, playing lockdown defense and shooting a career-best 39.6 percent from beyond the arc. If the Warriors are going to make a serious run at defending their title, they’ll surely need Wiggins.

Here are the latest updates on Wiggins’ ongoing absence.

MORE: Why the Warriors continue to lose on the road

Why is Andrew Wiggins not playing for the Warriors?

Wiggins is back with the team after a 51-day absence, due to a family matter that caused him to miss 23 games.

According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, Wiggins’ father, Mitchell, has been dealing with a “serious medical situation,” resulting in the star forward’s absence.

The Warriors initially listed Wiggins as out for the Feb. 14 game against the Clippers, citing personal reasons. Though Steve Kerr confirmed that they expected him back for their first game after the All-Star break on Feb. 23, Wiggins missed that game.

Both Kerr and Curry spoke after the Warriors game on March 28 about how the team is carrying on without Wiggins ahead of the playoff push.

“We want to be whole, and I’m sure he wants to be a part of this,” Curry said. “But when he walks through the door will be when it’s the right time for him. That’s kind of the expectation at this point.”

Curry echoed sentiments he’s shared over the past few weeks, telling reporters that he’s giving Wiggins space and has not been in direct contact with the forward.

When will Andrew Wiggins return?

Wiggins was back on the Warriors’ bench for Tuesday’s game against the Thunder, however, he won’t be back in the lineup until the postseason.

On Wednesday, April 5, during an appearance on 95.7 The Game’s “Willard & Dibs, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr confirmed that Wiggins would not play in the team’s final two regular season games.

The Warriors’ key decision-makers were adamant that Wiggins’ family situation would not cause him to miss the entire season. With the playoffs on the horizon, it appears the 28-year-old is almost ready to rejoin the team.

NBA playoff tiebreaker update for the Suns with 7 games left

NBA playoff tiebreaker update for the Suns with 7 games left

Clinging to the No. 4 spot in the Western Conference, the Phoenix Suns control their destiny when it comes to earning homecourt in the first round of the NBA playoffs.

At 40-35 with seven games to go, there are seven teams chasing Phoenix who are within 3.5 games of them in the NBA standings as of Wednesday morning.

All of the Suns’ remaining games are against Western Conference teams.

There are a few more locked tiebreakers in favor of the Suns since we last did this exercise two weeks ago. Phoenix has an official tiebreaker against the Los Angeles Lakers and Utah Jazz, who in ninth and 12th in the standings could mathematically still catch the Suns. The Suns already held a tiebreaker on the No. 6 seed Golden State Warriors.

The season finale against the No. 5 seed Los Angeles Clippers on April 9 continues to loom as a big game considering L.A. is a half-game behind Phoenix.

The No. 7 seed Minnesota Timberwolves visit Phoenix on Wednesday in what reportedly could be Kevin Durant’s home debut as a Sun. Minnesota has a strong chance to win a tiebreaker as it stands, but the Suns can lock in the tiebreaker to their advantage with a win.

Beyond tiebreakers, two trends are worth pointing out: The Pelicans have awoken at the right time with five wins in a row and sit in the No. 8 spot in the West, while the Dallas Mavericks are putting out negative vibes and due to a tiebreaker against the Thunder are out of the last play-in game. The Mavs have gone 3-7 over their last 10.

Here is a peek at the complex tiebreakers the Suns hold along with injury updates for the teams in chase of them.

The 2023 NBA All-Star Game is here. The league’s biggest stars will be together on the same court Sunday night in Salt Lake City with LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo serving as captains for the game. The 12-player teams will be picked just minutes before tipoff on Sunday night. Here’s how to watch the 2023 NBA All-Star Game.

While MVP candidates like Nikola Jokic, Luka Doncic and Jayson Tatum will be suiting up in the star-studded event, not every player picked will be participating. A few big names will be sidelined with injury, and some other players might be limited.

Here’s a look at the injury report for the 2023 NBA All-Star Game.

Out

Curry, Durant and Williamson were all picked to start the game — Durant was originally selected as an Eastern Conference starter when he was still with the Brooklyn Nets — but none of them will play on Sunday night due to injuries. Curry tore ligaments in his lower leg in early February, and could miss a few more weeks after the All-Star break. Durant is dealing with a knee sprain for the second time in two years, but his Suns debut should be on the horizon when the NBA’s regular season returns. Williamson, meanwhile, has not played since early January and it was recently announced he’ll miss multiple more weeks after the All-Star Game.

In

  • Joel Embiid, Philadelphia 76ers

Embiid has been dealing with foot soreness lately, and suggested he could sit out the All-Star Game earlier this month. Embiid has played in 45 of the 76ers’ 57 games this season, but has dealt with foot issues throughout his career. However the Philadelphia Inquirer reported Sunday that Embiid will play on Sunday night.

Questionable

Antetokounmpo suffered an injury on Thursday night in the Bucks’ final game before the All-Star break, spraining his wrist against the Bulls. Giannis sat out of Saturday night’s Skills Challenge with the wrist issue, and it’s unclear if he will play on Sunday night. He will still pick his team as captain.

Embiid and Antetokounmpo could both suit up on Sunday night and just play limited minutes in the exhibition game.
